Victorian Young Leaders – First Nations (VYLFN) program

Maffra Secondary College is proud to acknowledge the success of the Victorian Young Leaders – First Nations (VYLFN) program, which received the Secretary’s Marrung Award for Community Engagement at a ceremony held at the RACV City Club in Melbourne.

Representing the college at the event was Riley Shefford, an integral part of the award-winning program, who attended the ceremony alongside other participants and organisers.
The VYLFN program is a statewide initiative that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in developing leadership, intercultural understanding, cultural connection, and self-determination through immersive learning experiences, collaboration, and storytelling opportunities. Riley attended Koorie cultural immersion camps in both Phillip Island and Otaki (New Zealand) and encouraged and reassured Koorie students from across the state. Year 9 student, Harmoniie-Rose Barbour was one of these students, selected after a rigorous statewide application process. It has been great to learn about their adventures and the impact this program has had on both Harmoniie and Riley.
This award recognises the programs and participants' outstanding contribution to community engagement and empowering young First Nations leaders across Victoria.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this incredible achievement.
