2024 Dux – Lily Reid

The Maffra Secondary College dux for 2024 is Lily Reid, who achieved an ATAR of 85.6. Lily has worked exceptionally hard all year and is planning to study Psychology at Deakin University; she has been offered a Deakin University scholarship for excellence.  Of her achievement, Lily said:   “I am beyond grateful to receive Dux of the 2024 Class this year. This achievement feels surreal.  At the beginning of this year I did not picture myself being awarded such a high accomplishment. I have faced many challenges throughout my schooling, but I believe my hard work and dedication helped me persevere through all obstacles. I want to say a huge thank you to all my teachers this year.  Without their unconditional support and commitment to helping their students achieve their absolute best, I don’t think I could have made it as far as I have. Congratulation to all the year 12s this year, we have worked so hard and helped each other through the most challenging time. We all have something to be proud of.”

Maffra Secondary College – Median VCE study score of 28

This year, we are very proud of the fact that our median and mean VCE study score is 28.  This places us in the top 25% of all secondary schools across Gippsland, including all government, Catholic and private schools.

Our improved results have been the result of sustained and ongoing hard work across our school over recent years.  We have been strategically working to increase academic expectations at every year level, and to ensure every student can be their best.  We are delighted that our academic results are increasing in line with our departmental survey data, which shows that our school climate, culture and academic emphasis are well above the state average.

Recently our Year 12 English teachers were invited to present their work at the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (VATE) annual conference, and the VCAA have asked for their resources to be made available to every English teacher across the state!

We are proud of our 2024 results, but the work doesn’t stop here.  In 2025, Maffra Secondary College has been invited to partner with the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) to learn about a deliberate and structured approach to implementing evidence-based practices in our school.  We believe this will fit very nicely with the work we’ve been doing and we expect further growth in our academic results in the future.

Careers and Pathways 2024

Once again, our students have secured a diverse range of apprenticeships and traineeships in 2024.  We have a very strong careers program at Maffra Secondary College; every student receives individualised pathways support to navigate the ever-challenging and increasingly complex road of identifying personal career goals and working towards them.  We also work closely with HeadStart to support those who are interested in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.  This allows students to pursue their chosen vocation while completing their VCE or VCE VM.  Community and employer feedback from our careers programs and work placements has been extremely positive; our students are talented young people who bring their best to the workplace.
